Chapter-2

Important Points to remember :

  • The search of ideal square for the pieces.
  • Improve the position before begining the attack on weakness.
  • If you ignore the need for development, you will suffer as a consequence.
  • A weakness is only weak if it can be attacked. Weakness are always defined acc. to the pieces that remain on the board. Weakness obviously have a major importance in the middle game.
  • Knights on the rim are always dim. Knights should be on centre.
  • One of the key ways of improving is to analyse our own games yourself.
  • You should believe in yourself & believe yourself.

Chess Principles :

  • Develope your pieces quickly.
  • Control the center.
  • Put your pieces on squares that give them max. space.
  • Try to develop your Knights towards the center.
  • Don't take un-necessary chances.
  • Calculate forced move first.
  • Have a plan. Every move should have a purpose.
  • Assume your opponent's move in his best move.
  • Ask yourself "why did he move there ?" after each move.
  • If you are losing, don't give up fighting. Look for a Counter - Play.
  • If you are in doubt of an opponent's sacrifice, accept it.
  • Do not make careless pawn moves, they cannot move back.
  • Do not block in your Bishops. Bishops of opposite colors have the greatest chance of drawing.
  • Try not to move the same piece twice or more times in a row.
  • Exchange pieces if it helps your development.
  • Don't bring your Queen out early.
  • Castle soon to protect your King & develop your Rook.
  • Develop Rooks to open files. Put Rooks behind passed pawns.
  • Study Rook End Games. They are most common end games.
  • After Castling, keep a good pawn formation around your King.
  • Play over entire games, not just the opening.
  • Everyone blunders. The champions just blunder less often.
  • Don't make your own plans without the exclusion of the opponent's threats.
  • Do not focus on one sector of the board. View the whole board.
  • Bishops are worth more than Knights except when they are pinned in.
  • A Knight works better with a Bishop than another Knight.
  • Try not to look at your opponent's Rating until after the game.
  • Always play for a win.
